Festival Chic – Vintage Style

It might shock some of you to know that the 1969 Woodstock Festival wasn’t the first ever Pop music festival. In fact, there was one that was held two years earlier in what has been dubbed the ‘Summer of Love’. Officially billed as The Human Be-In, the event took place in San Francisco, attracting over 20,000 free spirits to come and ‘make love, not war’ to some of the most iconic American bands and musicians of all time, for example, Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin.

Compounded by the backdrop of the Vietnam War, The Human Be-In swiftly led to another massive festival in California that summer, The Monterey International Pop Music Festival, which has become the blueprint and inspiration for the legacy of festivals that have followed.

Rock music, Pop music, hippies, peace, love and a universal belief that festivals stand for fun and freedom of expression as well as music is what kick started the phenomenon fifty years ago, and thankfully, this is still true today.

Gate security and ticket prices may have sky rocketed, but the festivals’ fundamental importance as the temporary home of unity, togetherness and love is still palpable, this was clearly shown at the recent and incredibly moving One Love Manchester event organised and hosted by Ariana Grande.

So why not embrace this summer’s festivals with the spirit of the 60s and choose clothing that harks back to that first ever ‘Summer of Love’ by dressing vintage? Keep an eye out for ‘flower power’, psychedelia, and bohemian style clothes when scouring your local vintage shop or vintage fair.

Think long floaty maxi dresses or peasant style tops teamed with denim cut offs and fringed coverups. Even mid length vintage silk dressing gowns can be transformed into a striking jacket over denim cut offs. An iconic sixties look is of course a pair of wide legged jeans teamed with a strappy bikini top.

Accessorise with colourful vintage enamel jewellery and for hair; scarves, flower garlands and feathers conjure up the hippie vibe to perfection.
